Since 2018, Three has been a partner of CSM. This partnership manifested physically with the creation of the Three innovation studio within the college which also houses the 5G lab, a place to utilize the latest technology made possible by 5G. Three is the leading provider of 5G in the UK, having also installed a 5G network on campus at CSM, wants to explore the ways in which this new technology will impact our lives now and in the future through products and design. We were asked to conceptualize, design and model the ‘router’ of the future made possible by 5G.

I worked with Daniel Ellis and Xingui Lan on this project. We conducted a great amount of research on technology and sleep, a topic we were all excited about. Hoping to create something that really emphasized healthy sleep habits, this product would be applicable to all ages, not just children. And instead of creating restrictions and barriers that pressure us to turn off our devices and sleep, we wanted to create incentives. We wanted our design to exist as an emotional technology that thrives with human interaction and has the power to really change the users day to day life.

We decided to call our design Luna. The design was inspired by the shape and qualities of the moon. From wherever you are in the world, the moon holds a place in the sky. The moon has the power to connect each person with another. It watches over us as we sleep and guides us with its rhythm and consistency.

In a world where 5G offers new speed and connectivity, Luna was designed to make sure that we maintain healthy sleep behaviors in that future. In today’s world technology does and will continue to overwhelm us. And today, more people than ever before have difficulty sleeping. Luna is an electronic health device, designed to soothe and relax the human body. This physical and mental health benefit is unlike any router that exists today. Luna sets the mood, controls the light, and relays sounds that have the power to both engage and unwind the user.

Luna is fully controlled by the user through the Luna App. This app is simplistically designed for easy and quick use. With the touch of a button, the user is able to choose between a variety of sounds. Whether it be a podcast, an audiobook, the sounds of nature, or a soothing meditation, the choice is yours. And Luna’s light function works just the same. Luna also offers and encourages users to activate its “fade” feature, which permits its light and sound function to gradually soften and lessen over time, allowing the user to doze off as Luna drifts away.
