2019, Installation Concept, 360cm x 360cm x 360cm
University of Virginia BA Urban & Environmental Planning 2019
During my time at Virginia, there were plans to undergo a major new development and reconstruction along the Ivy Road Corridor. This would be an extension to our campus and become a new academic hub for students and faculty. I designed a series of contemplative spaces that could be incorporated into this new development.

This project is an implementation of small, intimate “hidden spaces,” or “outdoor living rooms.” One could say an oxbow off of the main stream. These secret, contemplative spaces currently exist all over campus. They are evident in the Lawn gardens, sitting spaces, and narrow pathways, and they should be incorporated into the developmental plans for the Ivy Corridor. This network of secret spaces will allow students and faculty to come, sit, and take a breadth. They will be designed to be stress-free zones; a place where one can take a break and come to terms with his or herself.

There are multiple opportunities of space within the Ivy Corridor development that will call for the use of temporary and moveable seating. Outdoor cushions and chair that are available for use by students and faculty will allow the community to create their own particular “hidden spaces.” The seating is temporary and transportable, and will be stored at a central location along the Iy Corridor when it is not in use.

Bubble tents are inflatable, plastic tents that take about ten minutes to set up. They can be transported from place to place. They were designed for people to come and enjoy the sensations of being sheltered, all while feeling at one with the environment. While emerged in nature, students will be sheltered but connected with the environment around them. Rain or shine, these contemplative spaces will be available for use.
